Couple of weeks back Verizon announced that it will finally be offering Apple’s iPhone on its CDMA network from February 10. One of the things that Verizon has not yet revealed is the pricing of the data plans for its iPhone customers.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Verizon’s Chief Operating Officer Lowell McAdam has just revealed that it will be offering the unlimited data plans on top of customers calling plans to iPhone customers.

WSJ reports:

It's official: Verizon is going to offer iPhone buyers a $30 unlimited data plan. The carrier's heir apparent and chief operating officer, Lowell McAdam, told us the news ahead of the company’s meeting with investors."I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot," he said. Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T, he said.
However, McAdam later clarified to WSJ that the $30 unlimited data plans will be available only for a temporary period as Verizon plans to move to tiered pricing like AT&T:

Speaking later Tuesday morning, Mr. McAdam said the iPhone unlimited plan will be a temporary offer and that the carrier will follow AT&T’s move to tiered pricing in the not too distant future.
If Verizon offers unlimited data plans then it will be a major selling point compared to AT&T as it had stopped offering iPhone customers unlimited data plans, even if it is for a temporary period. It was widely speculated that AT&T had introduced the data caps to curb the data usage just before iPhone 4 was launched. It will be interesting to see if Verizon’s network can handle the surge in data traffic from new iPhone customers.

It needs to be seen if Verizon plans to charge for the mobile hotspot feature, which is another major selling point of the Verizon iPhone. If Verizon offers the mobile hotspot feature for free with the unlimited data plans then it will end up convincing many AT&T customers who are sitting on the fence to switch to their network assuming AT&T does not change its pricing strategy.

AT&T currently offers the following data plans:

DataPlus

200MB of data for $15 per month. AT&T says this will be enough data to meet the needs of 65% of its smartphone users. If you go over the 200MB cap, AT&T will charge you $15 per 200MB if you go over the limit.
DataPro

2GB of data for $25 per month. According to AT&T, only 2% of its smartphone customers manage to consume more than 2GB of data per month. AT&T will charge you $10 per GB if you go over the limit.
AT&T offers iPhone tethering for $20 per month, which is available only to customers who opt for the DataPro plan. Users have to share the 2GB between your iPhone and their laptop.

What do you think? Will you be tempted to switch to Verizon if it offers the unlimited data plans along with the mobile hotspot feature for free? Please share your views in the comments section below.

I like the ATTs 2GB of data for $25 per month, 2GB is enough for me.

I average 5.6 gigs of data a month. I’ll never switch and lose my unlimited with AT&T. The 5.6 gigs is from tethering my laptop everyday, not from d/l massive files or anything like that and sometimes I stream Netflix or XM radio. Hopefully when 4G is out, the carriers will go back to unlimited but, it’s doubtful.

According to AT&T app I’ve used 19,041.77 mb (about 18.5 GB) witch is about normal for me And I’m 24 days into my billing cycle so I just re-up’ed with AT&T last week. As much as I love to hate att they give me what I want

There should be a 1GB Plan. For some, 200MB isn’t enough. Also, for some, 2GB is too much.

Not so fast. The unlimited data is for a limited time.
