Folks over at Android Central have come across a set of pictures that look like internal Verizon documents with pricing details of a bunch of smartphones and the Motorola’s recently announced Xoom tablet. The Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) powered tablet was first seen in December when Google VP Andy Rubin showed off the device as a prototype. It then appeared in a teaser video from Motorola. The video touted the then unnamed tablet to be “the next chapter in tablet revolution” and also took potshots at the Apple iPad terming it to be just a “giant iPhone”. The name of the tablet was made public at the recently concluded CES where it was revealed that it would sport a 1 Ghz dual core processor, 32 GB of storage and a 1280*800 pixel display. Other features included a gyroscope, barometer, an e-compass, accelerometer and adaptive lighting. The leaked pictures point towards the MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) of the Xoom tablet to be $799. This makes the device almost $70 dearer than the 32 GB 3G iPad, which retails for $729 – unsubsidized. Note that these prices are subject to change when the product is commercially launched in the next few months. But then, we believe these prices could be an indicator of what the final retail price might hover around. When announced, the device was touted to be the first device to run Google’s Tablet specific Android OS version – the 3.0 Honeycomb. Honeycomb is said to have been "designed from the ground up for tablets" and it would be interesting to see its performance vis-a-vis archrival iOS when the iPad 2 is released in the next few months.Apart from the Xoom tablet, the leaked list also listed updated prices for a few smartphones including the HTC Thunderbolt, Motorola Droid 2 and the Motorola Droid Pro 2 - each of which are listed at $249.99, $199 and $179 respectively. The prices of the phones seem to be subsidized – unlike in the case of the tablet. The document also says that the prices for the Thunderbolt and Xoom are valid from Jan. 21 to July 21, 2011.
Even though there has been a barrage of news of Android based tablets of late, Apple seems to be unperturbed by the competition. Back in October, Apple's CEO Steve Jobs had said that iPad competitors would have tough time coming close to the iPad pricing because Apple practically makes almost everything inside the device – right from the A4 processor to the OS. More recently, Apple's Chief Operations Officer Tim Cook too said he was least worried about the arrival of Android Honeycomb powered tablets, which he termed them as vaporware. Along with that he also made it clear that Apple isn’t sitting tight even though it had a huge first mover advantage compared to the others. How much do you think should Motorola price the Xoom for it to be considered a threat to the iPads domination? Do you think undercutting the iPad just on the pricing front would be enough for the Xoom?[Via AndroidCentral]TweetShareRelated PostsVerizon Working On Android-Powered iPad KillerGoogle Reported To Be Working On Android OS Based Tablet Device To Take On iPadiPad Competitors Lining Up For CES 2011 – Should Apple Be Worried?BlackBerry PlayBook To Be Priced Under $500 To Take On iPadRIM Unveils BlackBerry Playbook Tablet – Will It Be An iPad Killer?Posted by Whizkid on January 24, 2011 in iPad, iPad Tablet, Apple iPad | Permalink|Comments (8) Comments

January 24, 2011 at 8:31 PM ReplyTempting but to really compete with iPad pricke needs to me more accessible like 550-600. I would like to get my dirty litle sausage fingers all over the xoom still. I have a 64gb 3G iPad but xoom oozes speed and sexiness. Yummy
January 24, 2011 at 9:13 PM ReplyI certainly hope the $800 price tag will be subsidized. Tablet prices need to drop in 2011, if any company expects any sort of wide scale adoption. I love the iPad, but it lacks features. I shall wait until the end of Q1 before buying a tablet. I am sure I am like many other consumers, I care about price but not if it comes at the expense of features/specs.
January 25, 2011 at 2:13 AM ReplyWhy get a tablet for that much when a little more can get you an awesome laptop?
January 25, 2011 at 8:11 AM ReplyI think is obvious to read that you don’t have a tablet yourself. Because then you would know why people prefer tablets over laptops.
January 25, 2011 at 11:21 AM ReplyI love the ipad but i just saw a demo of this on Youtube and DAMMMMMM..this is the shit. Gotto have one when its out.
January 25, 2011 at 5:00 PM ReplyI need to get this Xoom device and ditch my Wifi iPad.
January 25, 2011 at 8:17 PM ReplyThe reason I am leaving iPad or moving to a new device like this one becuase iPad lacks lots of features. So this is why I want to get this sexy device!!!
