Reuters reports that Apple and Chinese mobile carrier China Mobile are holding talks to bring a TD-LTE version of the iPhone to China in the future.

China Mobile, the country's biggest mobile carrier, was earlier in talks with Apple to bring a TD-SCDMA version of the iPhone to China. TD-SCDMA is the Chinese 3G standard that is used by China Mobile. However, the TD-SCDMA version of the iPhone never arrived. Instead, Apple launched the iPhone in China with China Unicom as the official carrier partner.

China Mobile's Chairman Wang Jianzhou has revealed that Apple will fully support long-term evolution (LTE) 4G networks in the future. Reuters reports:

"We hope that when they develop the next-generation models, since Apple can create CDMA, they can also consider developing TD-SCDMA. These two years we have been discussing the issue. Right now the situation is moving forward. Apple has made it clear they will support TD-LTE," he said.

Even though we hear that there is crazy demand for iPhone 4 in China, Apple’s growth in China has been somewhat limited by its presence on only one of the carriers – that too, the smaller one. For Apple to expand its reach in China, it has to tap in to the vast subscriber base that China Mobile. With 584 million subscribers, China Mobile is by far, the biggest carrier not just in China, but the entire globe. China Unicom on the other hand had “just” 167.4 million subscribers.

Apple's Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook had revealed that one of the reasons for launching Verizon iPhone that supported CDMA network instead of the new LTE 4G network was because first-generation LTE chipsets would force design changes, which Apple was not prepared to make.

Based on Cook's comment, it remains to be seen if iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE or TD-LTE networks. Do you think lack of 4G support will be a deal-break for users planning to buy a smartphone in summer?

There will have to be something amazing to go and buy the new i5 if there isn’t then apple will lose a lot of customers

The processor will likely be the A5. I do agree though, it needs 4G capability. I’m more then willing to switch to one of the nice Android powered phones is the iPhone 5?s specs are not up to par. I’m sure I am not the only one either.
