Competition is always good for customers and looks like iPhone users are going to soon benefit from it with the launch of CDMA iPhone on Verizon’s network.

The Verizon iPhone 4 pricing details that were briefly revealed by Apple today confirmed that Verizon will be offering unlimited data plans to its iPhone customers.

Associated Press has just reported that the news of the unlimited data plans is putting a lot of pressure on AT&T and it is quietly giving some of its iPhone customers the option to switch to unlimited data plan to stop them from switching to Verizon.

AT&T is apparently allowing customers who were initially on the unlimited data plans but switched to the limited plans when AT&T started offering it back in June 2010 to switch back to the unlimited data plan.

Earlier, these customers were told they can’t switch back to the unlimited data plans once they had switched to the limited data plan.

Associated Press reports:

Verizon Wireless will start offering the iPhone on Feb. 10 with a draw that AT&T no longer offers to new subscribers: a plan with unlimited data usage. But The Associated Press has learned that some AT&T iPhone users on limited plans won't need to move to Verizon for unlimited data.In an unadvertised loophole, AT&T Inc. has allowed subscribers who have had an unlimited data plan in the past to switch back. That includes anyone who had an iPhone before June, when the limited plans took effect.
So now you know what to do if you plan to stick with AT&T but want the unlimited data plan. We think instead of doing this secretly, AT&T should announce the unlimited data plans for its iPhone customers to avoid losing customer who won't even bother negotiating with AT&T's customer service and will simply switch to Verizon.

If you have managed to switch back to the unlimited data plan then please let us know in the comments section below.

I think that AT&T is going to have to do a little more than offer the unlimited plan again to keep people from jumping ship. Perhaps undercutting Verizon’s data plans a bit and making tethering/hotspot cheaper to use and not charge for extra data… after all, why do we need to pay for data several times. Let us have it and use it as we see fit…

AT&T is NEVER the leader in price cuts. As a matter of fact at MOST they’ll follow suit. If verizon says $20 they might go $20 but never lower. Lessin’ T-Mobile does. Like with the 4g and everything else.

Yes, confirmed! My brother-in-law ordered online yesterday, even have additional 28% discount off $30 unlimited data. But when he called in to upgrade his expired contract (was on iphone 2G, $20 unlimited data plan), the rep said there is no more unlimited data plan, so I guess, you need to either order online or tell them you going to jump to Verizon.

January 26, 2011 at 8:43 PM Reply Someone said...

You should not have to do that. They are going to try to get you to switch plans but all you need to do it tell them that you want to keep things as they are. That is what I did when I got mine even though they tried like hell to tell me otherwise :)

So what if you have the (total scam) tethering plan? Since you HAD to switch to one of the capped plans to be able to use tethering. Not that I actually use it since the whole plan is a scam anyway…

January 26, 2011 at 9:44 PM Reply Jason said...

Well apparently its an extra $20 on top of whatever the data plan was. I have the iphone plan that was 30 data+multimedia unlimited = $50 for data. That doesn’t even include voice mins yet LMAO.

Damn so since I got the iPhone in July there’s no chance of me getting the unlimited data plan?

Apparently there is a method to use an iPhone 2G to get unlimited data on your new line/account then switch out the sim card or cut it down to fit the iP4.

Screw ATT. If they wanted (cared) about their customers they woul’ve offered this long ago. This proves that ATT is run by greedy gnomes that just care about high profits rather than building a relationship with their customers for long-term. I’m glad ATT’s reign over the iphone is over. I myself can’t wait to hop over to Verizon and forget about the nightmare that is ATT.

Success!!!!

Waited on hold for about 30 minutes while the operator discussed it with her supervisor. When she came back on the line she said the supervisor said it could not be done. Then I asked her why this was all over the news and indicated I’d be going with Verizon so she went to another supervisor who finally approved it. If you want this plan back, be persistent.

Just to clarify, If I had the unlimited data plan before I down graded and now I wanted it back, will I have to pay extra to switch over to the unlimited plan or its a free upgrade since Verizon is giving is offering the unlimited plan?

I don’t think it will stop people from going to Verizon especially if they have bad network coverage…as many people are just frustrated with AT&T
they should concentrate on making their network better and not on things like this…

They might offer data plans but that cannot change the fact that ATTs network is really poor.

JD power and Associates ranked ATT’s customer service the poorest among all for a reason. Even as of today, they’re living up to that reputation. I’m dumping them ASAP.

I hope att gets severely impacted after verizon’s existence. That’ll teach them. They have been screwing us customers with their poor network. iPhone is way too far ahead of their current network capabilities!!

If you’re an AT&T iPhone customer who is planning to switch to Verizon when the Apple's iPhone is available on its network early next month then it looks like Verizon wants to make things easier for you.

Macrumors is reporting that Verizon will be offering AT&T’s iPhone customers credit if they trade-in their AT&T iPhone for Verizon iPhone.

AT&T iPhone customers will get the following amount of credit for trading-in their GSM iPhones:

iPhone 2G - 16GB: $60iPhone 3G - 16GB: $105iPhone 3Gs 32GB: $160iPhone 4- 16GB: $280iPhone 4 - 32GB: $360It's not clear if the trade-in credit mentioned above is only meant for corporate customers as we had initially heard rumors that Verizon will be offering at least $200 to AT&T customers who trade-in their iPhone.

Anyways, a word of caution before you decide to jump ship. AT&T iPhone customers who are planning to switch to Verizon iPhone by terminating their contract with AT&T will have to pay an Early Termination Fee (ETF) of $325 (if you had purchased your iPhone before June 1 2010 then you will have to pay ETF of $175) minus $10 for each month that they were with AT&T. We now know why AT&T increased the ETF charges from $175 to $325 in May 2010.

Though users have the option to sell their old iPhones on eBay, Craiglist etc the credit offered by Verizon to AT&T customers for trading in their GSM iPhones appears to be quite attractive if users don’t want to go through the hassle.

Meanwhile, AT&T is quietly offering its iPhone customers unlimited data plans to stop them from switching to Verizon.

If you’re AT&T’s iPhone customer then please let us know what you plan to do in the comments section below.

I will not be switching because I won’t be able to simultaneously be on a call and utilize data features whilst on the Verizon CDMA network. Until that’s fixed, I’ll stay on GSM with AT&T.

January 27, 2011 at 8:27 PM Reply oh Yeah? said...

What the use in being able to do both simultaneously, if you can’t get the reception to do both to start off with.
And what about the processor speed required to do both at the same time?
Don’t settle for second best.

Well wifey is about to call very soon to find out if we could get the unlimited data plan because we use to have it. Were going to try to pull some strings and maybe tell att that were planing on moving to verizon then. But I have a feeling there not going to care as I got my phone after jun 1. But if that verizon thing is true it could help in my high a$$ ETF.

January 27, 2011 at 8:42 PM Reply John said...

I used to work at att, starting out as a call center rep and moving my way up the ranks until quitting as a floor manager. I can tell you that your bargaining power rests in your contract status. Also, each rep’s personality is very different and while one rep may offer you the deal, another rep may not. They’re all authorized to do so at their own discretion.

I was one of the nicer reps and usually understood what the customer wanted to achieve and worked around that. If the rep is in a good mood, he’ll give credit like it’s air. You just have to be nice and understanding while you’re trying to coax the rep into doing what you want him/her to do for you.

For example. Customers who aren’t under contract, I’ve given them $10/mo discounts on their bill for 6-12 months just for being loyal. I’ve also waived fees for upgrades, activations, etc when the situation convinced me that it was worthy. The asses that talked to me, I denied all of their requests and noted their account that the customer called specifically to get away with not paying for service and to deny their requests.

January 27, 2011 at 9:47 PM Reply Digitaltouch said...

So my wife called and let me tell you it wasn’t easy. We had the iPhone 3G for two years with unlimited data, on aug 2010 contract finished so instead of going with the iPhone 4 I went to in other carrier for a week after that we went back to att and got the iPhone 4. So they didn’t give us unlimited data because we canceled our contract and basically started new. So today wifey calls and tells the rep that we would like unlimited data as verizon is going to give to there customers unlimited and they would pay 280 dollars for us to switch. They rep said I can’t do it for us. So my wife could I speak to a manager? So she came on and talked to my wife and at the end of everything the manager said ok we will give it to you starting on the 6th of feb. Were happy we don’t have to deal with watching our data no more. Wish ya luck in trying. Just be nice and no what your saying.

I’ll stay with AT&T. Verizon won’t allow Internet surfing n calling simultaneously, I do tht alot, they won’t offer roaming service to my home country, once on cmda switching handheld will require a trip to verizon shop and so on. All the bells n whistles aside AT&T is far better choice for me at this point.

Are you kidding me???? Why would you feel bad for Android?? Seriously.. I don’t see the reason behind your statement.. Do you read the news from mobile websites?? Android is creeping up and about to surpass iOS!!! Yeah, I know, they’re making it sound like iPhone would regain momentum as soon as VZW starts selling the iPhone.. But trust me, those people that will sign up to VZW iPhone deal, are the same people that’s been using iPhone from ATT.. Because those who have Android, would definitely stick with Android and all it’s glory!! Do you see how many Android devices are coming out this year?? Tegra CPU’s (dual cores!) etc?? And iPhone has what in line?? White casing??? Come one now.. Get your facts together!! And lastly, with that same reason why ATT will go down the drain.. Their limited data, dropped calls etc.. The only reason why they’re still #2 on the top wireless provider here in the US right now, is because of iPhone.. And now that VZW is offering iPhone, it’s only a matter of time before ATT becomes the 3rd or 4th on the TOP wireless providers here in the US!! Besides, Android is the future.. Those who sticks with iPhone’s are just fanboys.. Android has just wayyyyyyyyy too many to offer compared to iPhone.. And that’s a fact!!

Probably to sell overseas since most of Europe is gsm network. And any iPhones that stay here would most likely see they’re way back to AT&T for new service contracts, in about 3 years you’ll see more iPhones on CDMA here in the U.S. Topping gsm.
